Infertility issues in men and women have been prevalent in our society for many hundreds of years now. What is IUI?

IUI stands for Intrauterine Insemination and this method of fertility treatment is also referred to as Artificial insemination.

Who should go in for an IUI Treatment?

1. Allergy to Semen proteins

In rare cases, women tend to get allergic to the proteins in the semen released during a sexual intercourse. This causes a burning sensation, redness and swelling the in vaginal area of women. While the couple has the choice to use condoms to avoid getting into such troubles, it defeats the purpose of getting pregnant. In such cases, IUI treatment is recommended since many proteins in the man’s semen gets removed during the semen washing process. This saves the woman concerned from the allergy related troubles while serving the purpose of getting pregnant.

2. Male factor infertility

This is referred to as sub fertility in medical terms. When the analyses done on the man’s semen shows that the sperm count is below average or the sperm’s movement is too weak to travel through to the egg of the woman, or the man’s sperm has abnormalities pertaining to shape and size, then IUI treatment is recommended. IUI process helps overcome most of these problems with the sperm since it focuses in identifying healthy sperm with high motility.

3. Cervical Factor infertility

The cervix which offers an entry between the Uterus and Vagina helps the motion of the sperm from the vagina to the Fallopian tubes during ovulation. The thickness of the mucus present in the cervix plays a crucial role in enabling the sperm’s motion. If the mucus is very thick, it does not support the movement of the sperm from the vagina to the fallopian tube and this act as an impediment to the pregnancy process.

4. Infertility for which reasons could not be identified

When the reason for infertility is unidentifiable after taking all the required tests, IUI treatment is recommended which gets supported by ovulation inducing medications.

5. Usage of Donor Sperm

In rare cases, some woman may have no choice left but to opt for donor sperms. IUI treatment is highly effective in using donor sperms to make the woman pregnant. IUI treatment thaws the frozen donor sperms obtained from certified labs for the purpose and helps the women get pregnant. .

6. Abnormal sexual life owing to ailments

IUI treatment is apt for those couples who are deprived of having a normal sexual life due to physical ailments like premature ejaculation in men, Diabetes and injuries caused to spine among many others.

The typical IUI Treatment procedure:

  • The sperm of the man is taken, washed and placed in the Uterus of the woman near the eggs.
  • The timing of this placement is important since the placement of sperm must be done exactly at the time of ovulation and not before or after the same.
  • The concerned woman is recommended to be on specific medicines while the menstrual cycle begins.
  • These medicines help in quickening the maturity of eggs for fertilization.
  • Gonadotropin injections are also given to the woman to speed up the process.
  • Through an Ultra scan, the exact location of the egg is ascertained so that the washed sperm can be placed very near to the same.
  • 40 hours after Gonadotropin is injected, the sperms are placed in the uterus.
  • Usually high number of sperms are placed in the Uterus to increase the chances of pregnancy.

  • Pregnancy Test – The final step

    Pregnancy test may be recommended by the Doctor after 2 weeks from the time of insertion of sperm in to the woman’s Uterus.

    This two weeks period is a highly testing one. Remain calm and undergo the pregnancy test. Remember, any stress experienced may defeat the purpose. Staying calm during this two weeks is like winning the battle to a great extent.
